Don't save your public parking spot.

Dear Chicago residents with cars,

Whatever middle-of-nowhere place you came from, you now live in a city. With public streets. Saving your shoveled snow-free spot with lawn chairs is the same as throwing a public hissy fit. These are public streets and your name isn't painted anywhere. Find another spot and get the hell over it.

Sincerely,

Lauren

  1. HA! When my parents lived in Chicago they had to deal with that all the time... that was almost 28 years ago... I see things haven't changed much since then!

  2. The year of the crazy blizzard on New Year's Eve/Day (1999?) people were NUTS with the space saving in Chicago. I could almost understand it for the first day or so, because it could take over an HOUR to dig your car out from the several feet of snow. But then time passed, the streets gradually got more clear, and people just left their placeholders for days. Come on.

  4. Apparently it is customary to do this in Boston. The city knows it and just lets the people be. (I recently read a Time article about it.) And beware to those that take a saved spot... your car could get vandalized.

  5. I guess I don't get it. Can't people just move the chairs? Or will you get keyed?

  6. Exactly, Emily... I'd just move the placeholders but then I run the risk of damage to my car. It's ridiculous!
